The era of a three-wheeled ATV began and ended quickly. It came about during the latter part of the 1960�s and ended during the latter part of the 1980�s. Their productions stopped mainly due to safety concerns. There was the danger of the vehicle tripping on uneven grounds.

The four-wheel concept
The market was dominated by the Japanese manufacturers such as Suzuki and Honda. Since the 1980�s they dominated the American market. They were essentially popular because of the power and efficiency that their vehicles delivered. ATVs became quite fuel efficient during this time.
Moreover, with the newer technologies of liquid cooled two stroke motors, long travel suspensions, and the fully manual transmission systems, these modes became much more reliable and hence popular.
